About Howick Intermediate

Howick Intermediate is a co-educational school. We cater for students in the middle years of schooling (11 – 13 years old). We have a rich heritage and a long tradition of educating highly achieving students who go on to have a positive impact on both the local and international community.

The School’s motto, ‘De Bon Vouloir Servir’, translated: ‘To Serve With Goodwill’, links back to the motto of Lord Howick (also known as Earl Grey). Our logo incorporates the border on Lord Howick’s coat of arms, the ships on which the Fencibles arrived and crosses which signify the early churches.

School Facilities

Our school facilities include two Technology blocks, an Arts block, an expansive sports field equipped with a fitness circuit, a 25m heated swimming pool, a school hall, library and purposefully designed health room.

We are in the process of designing an innovative learning environment, which will see our school modernised, one teaching block at a time, over the next two years. This will further enhance our future-focused approach to learning and teaching.

Our History

  • 1937
Our school has been in the heart of Howick since 1937 when, as Howick District High School, it served the children of the soldiers in the NZ Royal Fencible Corps. The first headmaster on our school site was Mr F. C. Day. As the population in the area increased, so the need for more schools arose.

  • 1961
In 1961 Pakuranga College opened and the older students were transferred to that school.

  • 1964
In 1964, Howick Primary opened to cater for the younger children.

  • 1965
In February 1965 the school was re-established as Howick Intermediate (middle school) and opened with 456 students.

  • 1966
The school was officially opened on 2 April1966 by Mr Kinsella, the Minister of Education at the time. The school opened with 15 classrooms, eight Form I (Year 7) classrooms, remodelled from the former District High School main block and seven new Form II (Year 8) classrooms.
